Overview

As the Head of Environment Health and Safety, your role will be focused on the continuous development and implementation of Sunrun’s health, safety, and wellness strategies for a diverse workforce. Through solid and impactful execution, you’ll promote our safety-first culture, in which our expectation is that everyone within the company, from our corporate office to our customer’s roof, goes home safe to their family, every day. The position manages a team of EHS professionals dedicated to safety program excellence, continuous monitoring and coaching as well as incident management. Our team serves the entire enterprise, from corporate headquarters in San Francisco to all of our 50+ branch locations and our customer-facing sales teams located across the country.
 
The safety of our employees is a team effort and requires this position to partner with leaders at all levels of the organization including the CEO and COO. With approximately 4,500 employees nationwide, Sunrun has a large and talented workforce of employees who perform safety sensitive tasks including working on roofs, with electricity, heavy road travel, in home sales consultations and in-home inspections. Responsibilities

  • Design and execute an integrated strategy that meets EHS and OSHA standards to ensure our business units achieve our safety expectations.
  • Be a strong leader, dedicated to the  continuous monitoring, coaching and incident management needs of our employees and leaders.
  • Ensure compliance with statutory requirements from agencies such as Federal and California OSHA, EPA, DTSC, and local regulatory agencies. Identify Enterprise and Operational risks to the business and be able to develop a mitigation plan. Always seeking a path to move the business forward safely.  
  • Using leading and trailing safety metrics identify the most effective hazard/risk reduction strategies and build executive support.
  • Design and implement safety site audits to identify risks and show improvement.
  • Utilize Human Performance tools and skills to lead a dynamic and diverse team that reduces and prevents injuries and identifies environmental non compliances. 
  • Innovate the process for reporting, investigating and communicating accidents, hazards and concerns.
  • Establish methods that ensure alignment with company safety expectations and provide early warning if there is misalignment.
  • Support sites with emergency response preparation, including emergency plans, training and coaching.
  • Ensure industry leading audit process at all locations nationally resulting in risk reduction.
  •  Design, launch and standardize processes for ergonomics, risk assessment and safely leadership/coaching, equipment safeguarding and injury prevention.
  • Establish sustainable OSHA voluntary protection programs.
  • Lead safety results via safety and environmental regulations, permitting and reporting.
  • Oversee crisis communication.
  • Provide a unified approach to EHS and drive and reinforce a zero-harm culture nationally.
  • Manage a team of safety leaders.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or preferably a master’s degree engineering, environmental science, industrial safety management or relevant field.
  • 10+ years of progressive environmental health and safety management experience in multi-location construction/industrial environment, 5 years minimum sr. level leadership experience.
  • Fluent knowledge of OSHA regulations is required.
  • Proficiency with state workers compensation and state-specific safety requirements is highly desired (especially in California, Hawaii, and the Northeast)
  • Certifications as an ISO auditor and DOT & Hazardous Materials, and other industrial related certification a plus.
  • Regulatory and compliance experience preferred
  • Successfully managed safety teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence at all levels.
  • Project management, root cause analysis problem solving ability.
  • Demonstrated strategic perspective with ability to lead with data and implement with results.
  • Innovative, enthusiastic about environment, health and safety solutions that enhance safety performance, reduce cost and strive sustainability.
  • Strong written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • Google Suite proficiency included gmail, sheets and slides.  Experience with Workday, Anaplan, and driver monitoring programs (e.g. Fleetmatics) is highly desired.
  • Experience working with a distributed, non-exempt field-based population is highly desired.
